Water Resource Organisation officials of the Public Works Department are planning to release water for irrigation of nearly one lakh acres in the first zone of the Parambikulam Aliyar Project scheme from January 22.
1.75 lakh acres of additional agricultural land was attached to the project in 1994, the duration was reduced since the project had to cater to a total extent of 3,77,152 acres.Parambikulam-Aliyar project through it had been receiving water from Palar river for more than a century.
The Parambikulam-Aliyar project (PAP) agreement signed between Tamil Nadu and Kerala on May 29, 1970 has retrospective effect from November 9, 1958.Construction of check dams is the fulfilment of people’s aspiration.
This Dam was built at the time of Kamarajar. The dam is operated and maintained by Tamil Nadu but the ownership rests with Kerala,[1][2] Per the agreement with Tamil Nadu, Kerala was supposed to receive 7.25 TMC feet of water per year from the Parambikulam Aliyar Project of which the Parambikulam Dam is a part.
